If you are the legal representative of Jimi's estate and you don't want his ROIOs shared here you can send me an e-mail at idontbelievetherearenoids@yahoo.com and I will close this blog and stop sharing Jimi's ROIOs freely with other fans. As you will know ROIOs exist - you can't make them vanish. So, why not let Jimi's fans download them for free instead of having to purchase them from commercial bootleggers on auction sites? The ATM series was created by fans to be shared freely amongst fans. We support Jimi and his estate by purchasing his official releases which are absolutely not shared here.

ReplyDeleteThe tracklist for Disc 4 according to infromthestorm is as follows for tracks 1 - 16 :
Voodoo Chile" (13) (longer alternate mix of composite) 9:15 / Record Plant, New York City, NY 03.05.68: "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (1-21) (full session, mono) 15 tracks; 32:34
"Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (1-3, 5-16, 18-21) is the full circulating session in a dry mono mix, here in slightly better quality than most previous appearances. (17) is the official mix of (16) taken from "Lifelines".
I'm assuming for tracks 2-12 the "takes" would correspond to Voodoo Chile(1),Voodoo Chile(2)etc...
Would tracks 13-16 actually be Voodoo Chile(18) - Voodoo Chile(21)?
The numbers in brackets at infromthestorm don't correspond to takes. Here is an explanation from Denny over at JPIO
ReplyDeleteMost Hendrix tracks are referenced by two different sets of numbers. The
ones we are the most familiar with, which have been around for years, I
believe was started way back by the "Hey Joe" group. This system was
incorporated into the publication of "Jimi Hendrix: Electric Gypsy" by
Shapiro and Glebbeek and continued in "UniVibes" by Glebbeek according
to notes I have from Doug Bell. In the early days of the Experience
Hendrix website, they even referenced these numbers for a while. I'm not
positive on this but I don't think the page exist anymore there.
It uses a letter & number system of:
S - Studio
L - Live
P - Private (Jimi's own recorder, which is confusing because it also
shows up as studio jams on regular equipment)
I - Interviews
The number after the letter refers to the Chronological
"released/discovered" date of a particular track whether it's official
or on a bootleg and not the actual studio date the track was actually
recorded. Also with studio releases, this becomes problematic. This is
why the first official Purple Haze starts with S003 & not 001. Hey Joe
is S001, Stone Free is S002, and so on. It gets even worse as there is
no deviation between a stereo or mono mix on the early official
releases. All of the above tracks (and many more through Electric
Ladyland) have the same number for both the stereo and monaural mixes
even though they are different. The above problems are the reason I use
both numbering systems on the Studio Series to try and hold the
confusion to a minimum.
The second numbering system is simpler and was introduced by "Jimpress"
in "From the Benjamin Franklin Studios" and "The Studio Log"
publications. This is the system that Hans-Peter Johnsen prefers and
uses at his "In From The Storm" website. Like the first system, it
refers to the Chronological "released/discovered" date of a particular
track but because it came into existence later, the numbering sequence
in many cases matches the actual recording date closer. Still not
perfect as the early official releases will still come first.
Every track starts with the number 1 and runs straight through all known
recordings of that track. No letters such as "S" for Studio or "L" for
Live is used but occasionally "J" or "JA" (Acoustic in this case) will
pop up for Untitled Jams and Home Demos. This makes researching a track
much easier. Now, the first release of Purple Haze in it's stereo mix is
(1) and the official mono mix is (2). The Legacy mono mix is (3) and so
on. Since the system is still reliant on its release or discovery date,
early studio takes and live recordings can have really high numbers. A
Purple Haze stereo second alternate mix which is slightly different and
more complete than alternate mix (4) is numbered (120) even though they
were both mixed from a take recorded on January 11. 1967. Even Live
tracks can get a little goofy. Purple Haze, 2/3/68 Winterland, second
show, is (28) but the second show on 2/4/68 is (115). Denver on 2/14/68
is (125) with Dallas on 2/16/68 getting us back to (29). The
fluctuations being caused by new shows and studio material being
discovered at a much later date.
Thanks for the reply (and for clearing things up for me)...
